Character and religion

17.01.2013 01:54 EST
Character and religion are generallyregarded as being in the same box of ideas,or rather a box within a box. After all, everyreligion lays down certain guidelines andthose who follow these rules do claim tobe of good character. However, if you read the religious textscarefully, you will realize that most holybooks do not specifically lay down a longlist of do’s and donts. Even if they do, theyhardly ever say that those who do notfollow these guidelines deserve to beshunned because of a bad character. Infact, the word ‘character’ is hardly evermentioned in religious books. If you seeking a rough map to goodcharacter, through the books of religion, then a better way to go about your quest isto study the lives of those who wrotethose books or founded those religions. They were, ultimately, living the lives thatthey thought were best. Religious leaderslead not by lectures, but by setting anexample.Whether you look at Guru Nanak or Christor Mohammad or the pantheon of HinduGods. Their stories will tell you aboutcourage and conviction, about defeatingevil forces and spreading peace and love. They have broken rules defied socialconvention when it went against theirconscience. The same holds true of latter-day spiritualleaders like Kabir, Swami Vivekanand, SriAurbindo, Sai Baba and so on. Trulyenlightened leaders do not just lectureabout what comprises good character. They live it out for you to see and tofollow.
Thank you for sharing this time I gain new insight in the style of you
