Novel Part 3 (A)

@@@@@ PART 3 (A) @@@@@
WELL, WELL, I did not know you were a National Cadet. I was wondering whose boots they were. We don't often see a uniform here. Besides, it suits you. In our time such things did not exist. I played football. Also hockey. But what I enjoyed most was the cross-country. Do you do it ever? They probably have more interesting things now. But the breed could not have disappeared. The long-distance runner is nothing if not a breed. Flying probably comes the closest. I had a friend who went on to become a Brigadier. You might have heard his name; he was in the news recently. You haven't? No matter. He and I were the two runners of our college. The thing about cross-country is you get very close to the people you run with. The silence of the wilderness, the smell of grass just after rains, mist on a winter morning laced with wood-smoke, steaming ponds and the creaking of a rahat, they sort of bind you as a two hundred metre sprint never can. Between the Brigadier and me there were other things, too. Tell me, if I am not being inquisitive, have you come from a parade? Ha, you have been rehearsing for the celebrations of the Republic. I should have guessed. I did not know they started three months in advance. But, much practice is no doubt needed to make a parade. Long is the road to perfection, my father used to say, even if it ends in death. How did my father die? What a question, my friend! At times I myself wonder about it. How did he die? Why did he die?
