Guwahati International Film Festival begins

GUWAHATI: Cinelovers of the North East are in for a treat with the screening of a host of films by both national and internationally acclaimed filmmakers at the second edition of the CineASA Guwahati International Film Festival which began here today. The seven-day film festival, organised by Cine Arts Society, Assam (CineASA) got started with the screening of Sinhalese film 'Akasa Kusum' by Sri Lanka's award winning filmmaker Prasanna Vithanage who was present on the occasion as the guest of honour. A few of Vithanage's other films would be screened in the festival's 'Jewel of Asia' section, said Festival's organising secretary Bitopan Borbora. A retrospective of Pedro Almodovar, a tribute section on the works of acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Kim Ki Duk, a focus section to showcase the best of the Iranian films by directors like Mahsin Makhmalbaf, Mazid Mazidi, Abbas Kiarostemi and Bahman Ghobadi were also lined up. On the occasion of the 50 years of French New Wave, films of Jean Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut and Claude Chabrol will also be screened. Apart from these sections, a package of highly acclaimed Asian and European films, which bagged awards at Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Locarno, Pusan, Karlovy Vary and London International Film Festivals will also be screened at the festival.
