For a geometric figure, the SECOND MOMENT OF AREA is sometimes addressed as the "AREA MOMENT OF INERTIA". The term comes into play when we try to analysis the phenomenon of "BENDING OF BEAM". The term comes into promince when a sheet or area tries to rotate with respect to an Axis on the plane. The tendency to rotate of an area is directly proportional to the "Second Moment of an Area".
