International Day Of The Girl Child:

18.10.2016 03:09 EDT
Bringing girls into the data revolution this years celebration of the international day of the girl highlights the importance of sex disaggregated data. in a commentary, helena minchew of the international womens health coalition explains that detailed, qualitative information can inform projects that can be lifechanging for girls, and we shouls not underestimate its value.
There is no argument that a focus on girls is needed to achieve the SDGs, nor that we need a data revolution. There are obvious gaps in what we know about girls lives, hampering our efforts to improve their lives.
For example, we dont haveagood data on the number of girls who are married between ages 10 to 14 . But data revolution must beyond just couunting girls. It must go further than the often cited need for sex disagreggated data. It must encompass more than official data sources, such as demographic and health surveys, national stastical commissions, and UN agencies. To supplement these sources, we need to look to the local organizations that work most closely with girls, and we must be willing to ask difficult questions.
