The Rule

The folding wood rule, is used to measure across a wide opening. One big advantage is that heights can be measured without needing two people and a ladder. The folding rule is the only rigid scale with can be put in your pocket. When measuring horizontal distances with an unsupported rule, the numbers should not face the floor or ceiling. The folding rule can be extended farther if the numbers face to your right or left.
Avoid dropping the folding rule on its end. The joints may loosen enough to case visibile errors. Every joint offset adds up over several feet. Dirt and rough joint surfaces will make it difficult to dole the rule. Keep the joints protected by applying graphte or silicone lubricant at regular intervals. Do not use common oil since it will attract dirt.
