The steel tape measure, is the most compact general purpose length scale. Workers prefer the tape rule because it is causate and it prefer up the measurement job. A spring inside the case pools up the tape quickly.
On the end of the tape is a hook that catch the edge of the woodpiece. Many tapes have a hook called a TRUE ZERO HOOK. The hook can slide a little on its mounting pins. This gives the accuracy of a true zero point whether the hook pulls on the workshece or pushes on it. The purpose is to allow for the thickness of the hook tab for both ways of measuring.
steel tape measures are available in different lengths and widths. Lengts ranging from 3 ft. (1 m) to 20 ft . (6 m) are sufficient for home maintenance work. Metric and conventional styles are widely sold. Tape widths range from 1/4 in. (6 mm) to 1 in. (25 mm).
The wider tapes are the more durable they be.
A special advantage of the tape measure is its flexibility. The tape can be used to measure along curved surfaces or twisting shares. Curves as small as the roll in the tape case can be measured.
