Care Of Tapes

A measuring tape which will not retract with the use of one hand is even more bother than a common measuring stick. A tape must be kept clean, dry, and free of kinks if it is to work smoothly. Substances the home mechanic must keep away from tapes include: paint, glue, caulking, tar, wall patching compounds, and sanding debris. Recall that grit will wear away the numbers on the tape during rolling and unrolling.
Tape wear or breakage is often unavoidable. Some manufacturers of the better steel tape measures supply replacement tapes. No special tools will be needed to make the repair.
