.:3.2:. PAST TENSE

1. Simple past: It is used to talk about actions completed in the past.
e.g.: I went to my uncle's house yesterday.
They visited the museum last week.
She received the telegram late last night.

*Structure:subject+past form of the verb.

2. Past continuous: It is used to talk about actions going on at some time in the past.
e.g.: We were watching the television all evening.
I was reading a book when the lights went off.
We saw an accident, when we were going to school.

*Structure: subject+was (or) were+verb+ing.

3. Past perfect: It is used to talk about actions completed before a certain other actions in the past.
e.g.: When we reached the station, the train had already left.
She had written the letter before he arrived.
Tendulkar had already completed his century, when we reached the stadium.

*Structure: subject+had+verb past participle.

4. Past perfect continuous: It is used to talk about actions which began before a certain time in the past and
continued up to that time.
e.g.: Kapil Dev had been playing for India till 1994.
I had been staying in Hyderabad till last month.
She had been writing a novel for two months when I last met her.

*Structure: subject+had been+verb+ing.
