CHINNAR WILD LIFE: Chinnar gets 48 days of rain from northeast monsoon October and November . annually located in the rain shadow region of the western Ghats the sanctary occupies the forested region on either side of the marayoor- udumalped road. This is the second habital of the endangered giant grizzled squirrel of india. The location of the sanctuary offers the unique advantage of watching its fascinating wild life at close quarters from the road without venturing deep into the jungle. The marayoor sandal forest and the beautiful thoovanam waterfalls are located here.Mammals- elephant, gaur,spotted deer, panther,sambar, the endangered giant Grizzled squirrel, human langur, rabbit etc are the main population of here.
ERAVIKULAM NATIONAL PARK: This is the one of the wettest regions of the world rainfall : 4500 mm . frost is common in the winter months December to February. It is situated in Munnar hill station. It established in 1975 to protect the nilgiri Tahr, The eravikulam sanctuary was declared as national park in 1978. Considering its ecological, faunal, floral, Geomorphologic and zoological significance. The park is Breathtakingly beautiful and comparable to th alpine ranges, this land of the neelakurinji ( A flower)is 7 km from here. The main population is tigerm panther sloth bear, wild dog, civet cat, Nilgiri Langur, Wild Boar, Nilgiri Tahr.
KUMARAKAM BIRD SANCTUARY:Located in the bank of Vembanad lake, Kumarakam bird sanctuary an ornithologists paradise, is a favourite haunt of migratory birds like the Siberian stork, egret, darter, heron and teal. Other common varieties like the woodpeckers, skylark, crane, water hen, and parrots can also be spotted here. A cruise along the vembanad lake is the best way to experience the sanctuary. Pathramanal and enchanting island on the lake can be accessed by boat from here. The best time is June to august or November to February. Pathiramanal :- This is the 10 acer island on the backwaters is home to many reare verities of migratory birds from different parts of the world.
THATTEKKAD: Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary thattekkad, covering an area of 25 Sq Km and located abour t60 kilomeeter from Cochin. Is an one of the important bird sanctuary in india. Dr Salim Ali is a famous ornithologist has described this sanctuary as the richest bird habitat on peninsular india. A general visitor give an opportunity to see over 200 varieties of rare species of birdsm home in their natural environment. This sanctuary is located in the bank of the periyar river. Thattekkad consists of tropical evergreen forests, tropical semi evergreen forest and tropical deciduous forests, providing an ambience for stay that takes the visitor close to nature. The sweet music of birds adds to the ambience and enhances the mood. Some of the varieties of bird in thattekad include Indian roller, cuckoo, common, snipe, crow , pheasant, jungle nightjar, kite, grey Drongo, Malabar trogon, woodpecker, large pied wagtail, Baya sparrow, grey jungle fowl, Indian hill myna, robin, jungle babble, Jordon’s Nightjar, Indian cuckoo, cormorants and darter.
One of the most attractive sanctuary of world is thekkady. What view gets from here that never get anywhere in the world. This sanctuary is situated between 900-1800 m above the sea level. Annual rainfall is 2500mm. The very sound of the word thekkady conjures up images of elephants, unending chain of hills and spices scented plantations . it spread across the entire district of idduki. Over 1965 flowering plans including 171 grss species 143 species of orchids. The only south Indian conifer podocarpus wallichianus grows in the forest of periyar tiger reserve. Mammals:- thirty five species which include the Asian elephant, Indian bison, sambar deer, Indian wild dog, barking deer, smooth coated otter which can be sighted during a boat cruise in the periyar lake . Birds:- 265 species including migrants. The Malabar grey hornbill the Indian pied hornbill, white bellied tree pie, many species of drongos, seen near by boat landing. Reptiles:- Cobra, Viper, Krait, A number of non- poison snakes and the Indian monitor Lizard. Amphibians: Frogs like the colorful Malabar gliding frog, Fungoid frog, Bicol red frog, Pisces(Fish):- The periyar lake and streams have several species of fish including the masher, the famous and endangered game fish of india. The smooth coated otter can be frequently spotted from the boat. Plantation: Tea, cardamom, pepper and coffee plantations, abound in the areas adjoining the tiger reserve . This trip is like a Hollywood picture viewing thrill with a wide forest.
