Inadequate production of red cells

This is another large and complicated area where many factors can conspire to cause anaemia. The most fundamental is an inadequate intake of iron in the diet. This is unlikely with a normal western diet or a vegetarian diet but can happen in vegans who do not eat eggs. Two of several vitamins essential to red cell production are vitamin B12 and folic acid. Lack of vitamin B12 is found in the condition pernicious anaemia in which vitamin B12 is notabsorbed because the body lacks a protein that normally scavenges vitamin B12 from the diet. The condition is easily treated with regular injections of vitamin B12. Folic acid deficiency is not usually a problem except during pregnancy; then it can be dealt with by taking folic acid tablets.Red cells and the other cell components are made in the bone marrow and if the bone marrow failsthen anaemia inevitably follows:

Failure of the bone marrow is basically what happens in leukaemia and a similar effect can follow from reaction to certain drugs.e.g. Methotrexate.Coeliac disease causes failure of absorption of essential nutrients withresulting anaemia.
