This begins by establishing the diagnosis and this is a process of exclusion of other possibilities. Therefore the individual will have a battery of blood tests looking for, in particular, illnesses such as under-active thyroid gland, kidney disease, anaemia, all things which can creep up on an individual in a slow, subtle way. Great attention is paid to the individual's psychological and social state which many doctors believe tobe crucial to developing the condition.Assuming no other illness is found, then the treatment is to encourage a programme of planned return to activity. This involves pushing oneselfeach day to do something even though that may cause tiredness and an increase in muscle achesand pains. Some specialists prescribe antidepressants especially serotonin re-uptake inhibitors such as fluoxetine whilst continuing to provide psychological support.
Many sufferers take a couple of years to recover and a large proportion do not appear to recover at all but go into a state of chronic fatigue. It is quite unknown how to deal with these individuals at present. Children have a better outlook than adults and are more likely to recover fully.
