Those with a sickle cell trait need no treatmentat all but have to be aware of possible risks in certain circumstancessuch as being at high altitude and having an anaesthetic. Those withmore serious illness are liable to recurrent pain and sometimes have a sickle cell crisis. This occurs if critical small blood vessels become blocked in the bones, spleen, kidney or elsewhere. Such cases require urgent treatment to prevent further damage and to preserve tissue function.Anyone who either has sickle cell disease, who has the sickle cell trait or who may be at risk of this i.e. from African origin should have screening and carry a warning card.
