In the long run the mosteffective treatment is to alter lifestyle to include healthier eating with less cholesterol, less smoking and to increase exercise. The western world on the whole has been absorbing this health message over the last few decades and it is thought that this is why the incidence of heart disease and atherosclerosis has been gradually falling forsome while. It is most important to reduce high blood pressure if this is present and to control other risk factors for complications of atherosclerosis, the most important being to stop smoking and to control diabetes and overweight.

Cholesterol Reduction
There is now overwhelming evidence of the benefits of reducing cholesterol, preferably through diet but failing that with medication. Anyone with atherosclerotic symptoms such as claudication or angina, orindeed anyone who has had a heart attack must try very hard to get their cholesterol down to the currently recommended levels. These vary almost month to month and your doctor can give up to date recommendations. If this cannot be achieved by dieting then there is a range of medication for reducing cholesterol, using drugs called statins, of which examples are simvastatin and cerivastatin.
