Flesh exposed to severeenough cold becomes damaged through the freezing of the small blood vessels within theflesh. Called capillaries, these are the final vessels of blood flow and will not re-grow once destroyed by cold. Therefore, a tiny area of skin and flesh dies and a small area of ulceration may break out. The areas of the body at biggest risk of this are the extremities,i.e. fingers and toes and the end of the nose.
