The treatment of high blood pressure comprises a range of changes to lifestyle as well as medication. The changes in the lifestyle are simple and add up toa modern healthy diet; most important is to reduce salt and to reduce any excess weight. If you have highcholesterol then you should diet to reduce this to a recommended level. It may also be recommended to reduceexcessive alcohol intake and, of course, to stop smoking. These measures are often enough to reduce blood pressure by about 5% as well as considerably reducing the associated risks from high blood pressure and so are recommended for people who just have moderately raised hypertension.

Duration of Treatment
An older person who is found to have hypertension is extremely unlikely to ever be able to stop treatment; just occasionally it proves possible to withdraw treatment in someone who develops hypertension, e.g. around pregnancy or who makes a significantchange to their lifestyle. In general though you should regard treatment as a lifetime commitment and it is important to combine that with changes to lifestyle as previously outlined. Treatment of hypertension is one of the most effective treatments that modern medicine can offer and if it recommended for you, then you should take it very seriously.
