Some causes are correctable with simple tips on management, such as feeding problems, being aware of the baby's need for nutrition, offering a varied diet. Other more serious conditions may require specialist help e.g. congenital heart disease, kidney problems and an under-active thyroid gland. In the case of a mal-absorption state it may be possible to stimulate growth by removing whatever is causing the mal-absorption e.g. gluten in the case of coeliac disease.Emotional neglect is difficult to prove and to handle; often the parents need support to boost their own self-esteem and caring skills, but sometimes a child has to be removed from neglectful parents for its own benefit.
