Alcohol abuse !

Alcohol Abuse is a disorder characterized by the excessive consumption and dependence on alcoholic beverages, leading to physical and psychological harm and impaired social and vocational functioning. Alcohol abuse causes extensive damage to health and society. It results in thousands of innocent deaths each year, and exacerbates situations involving violent crimes and domestic violence.

The following factors are responsible for the alcohol abuse they include
• Genetic factors
• Environmental factors
• Sociocultural factors.

Symptoms of alcohol intoxication include
• Aggression
• Behavioral changes
• Coma
• Coordination difficulty
• Difficulty standing
• Drowsiness
• Drunkenness
• Inappropriate sexual behavior
• Memory problems
• Nystagmus
• Poor attention span
• Poor judgment
• Slurred speech

It may be difficult because there is no detectable difference between a person who drinks frequently and a person with the condition.
Screening test include cage questionnaire, alcohol dependence data questionnaire, Michigan alcohol screening test (MAST), alcohol use disorders identification test and Paddington alcohol test (PAT).
Other tests include:
• DSM - IV diagnosis
• Genetic predisposition testing
• Urine and blood tests

Detoxification Treatment includes abstinence from alcoholin a controlled environment and close monitoring of vital signsand any withdrawal symptoms. In some cases, detox treatmentcan also include administering benzodiazepines.
• Antabuse (disulfiram)
• Naltrexone (Revia or Vivitrol)
• Acamprosate (Campral)
