About Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a prosperous country in South Asia. Bangladesh has got widespread poverty and poor infrastructure of health, economy and education as the legacy of- firstly, colonial rule by the British and Pakistan and then the corrupt and inept governance of the politicians immediately after the independence in 1971. But in the last two decades Bangladesh continued to make progress in economy, health, education and above all as an flourishing democracy in the region.

Agriculture has always been so important in country’s economy since it absorbs a significant amount of workforce and produces food grains enough for the vast population. Since the last decade, diversifying the economy towards industrialization was a priority of every government. Ready-made garments industries and the exports from them are examples of that diversification. Onshore and offshore gas reserves hold some real chance of future prosperity if planned, explored and exploited properly. Computer software, service and financial sectors, telecommunication and energy sectors have attracted some foreign investment in recent years.

Bangladesh won its independence in 1971, which was followed by chaotic years of politics. In the late years of seventies law and order were restored. Bangladesh spent 15 years under military rule before some kind of democracy was finally restored in 1990. Since then there have been three peaceful power transformations between the governments. Media in the country is free from political hindrance as the country’s constitution guarantees. Bangladesh has proved itself as a country of communal harmony and religious tolerance unlike her neighbours. The recent smear campaign of opposition party at home and abroad and the article in Far Easter Economic Review against Bangladesh are done by political and social pariah.

Begum Khaleda Zia, the widow of President Ziaur Rahman came to power following a landslide election victory in October 2001 of the four-party alliance led by her Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Her government has pointed to successes in handling the economy and tackling crime, corruption and environmental issues. The present government has succeeded to bring law and control under relative control and curtail corruption in the last two years.
