Churnet Valley Railway

How do you keep two boisterous lads, aged 7, nearly 8 and 10, happy on a wet Wednesday in August?

We decided to take them to ride on a steam engine in the Staffordshire Moorlands. Apart from the treacherous walk down a country lane with no pavement for much of the way, the journey there was pleasant.

Entering the Froghall station, you get a feeling for the history of the place. Painted in the red and cream of the steam era, it is a pretty station, better viewed in sunlight.

Then the train arrives. A black locomotive, steam swirling all around. You get a nostalgic lump in your throat as you board for the twelve and a half mile journey. Our family ticket (£20 for 2+2) allowed us as many journeys as we wished.

I would recommend this to anyone, and the children would love the Thomas days, as well as the Halloween and Sorceror specials.

One thing I must say, and that is that the staff are all absolutely wonderful and welcoming. A special thank you to the very kind lady from the tea room who, when we were unable to get a taxi to pick us up, gave us a lift to the bus stop! You made our day out so very, very special!
