Approaching God Personally

“And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.”

Hebrews 10:21-22 We saw that we can approach God boldly because of Christ’s sacrifice on Calvary. Sin separated us from fellowship with God, but because of Christ we can boldly approach God through prayer each day!

Some religions offer a human mediator between God and man, but God’s Word says we can approach God personally. He is waiting to meet with us, and He wants to spend personal time with us.

We can come to God personally through a heart of faith. James 1:6 says, “Let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.” We can know that when we pray to God through a pure heart, He hears us! We can have faith that God will spend time with us and will hear our prayers.

We can also come to God personally through a prepared heart. First John 3:3 says, “Every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.” When we have a heart that is pure and prepared to speak with God, He will meet with us. Before we spend time with God, we must have hearts that are humble and free of sin. Jeremiah 29:13 says, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

A missionary to Zaire once told the following story: "A mother at our mission station died after giving birth to a premature baby. We tried to improvise an incubator to keep the infant alive, but the only hot water bottle we had was beyond repair. So we asked the children to pray for the baby and for her sister. One of the girls responded, 'Dear God, please send a hot water bottle today. Tomorrow will be too late because by then the baby will be dead. And dear Lord, send a doll for the sister so she won't feel so lonely.'

“That afternoon a large package arrived from England. The children watched eagerly as we opened it. Much to their surprise, under some clothing was a hot water bottle! Immediately the girl who had prayed so earnestly started to dig deeper, exclaiming, 'If God sent that, I'm sure He also sent a doll!' And she was right! The Heavenly Father knew in advance of that child's sincere requests, and five months earlier He had led a ladies' group to include both of those specific articles."

Even as this child came to God personally, we can seek our Lord as well. When we have a pure and prepared heart, we can have faith that God will hear our prayers. Are you seeking God with a pure heart? Take time now to examine your heart. Make sure you have a pure and prepared heart. Then seek God personally and spend time with Him through prayer.
