Approaching God Boldly

The word “therefore” in our verse today refers back to Christ’s offering for sin. Because Christ died on Calvary, we are able to approach God through prayer. In Old Testament times, no one was allowed to enter the Holy of Holies in the temple and approach the Ark of the Covenant except for the high priest. Once a year, the high priest would make sure he had confessed any sin he had committed and would enter into the Holy of Holies. He would offer a sacrifice unto the Lord upon the Ark of the Covenant for the sins of Israel.

There was a veil in the temple between the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies which signified a barrier between the people and God. Because God is holy, He could not fellowship with an unholy people. But that was changed when Christ died on Calvary!

Matthew 27:51 says, “And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.” When Christ died, God rent the temple veil in two, thus signifying that those who believe on Him would now be able to approach Him at any time. When we are saved, God forgives our sins and counts us as one of His children, giving us the privilege to boldly approach Him through prayer each day!

Charles Spurgeon once said, “Holiness is not the way to Christ. Christ is the way to holiness.” We cannot become holy on our own. Christ is our way to holiness, and we must spend time each day with Christ to become more like Him. We must boldly approach God through prayer.

As believers, we have access to the throne of God any time! We can approach God boldly because of what Christ did for us on Calvary. Yet sometimes we neglect to meet with Him each day. Not only does God give us access to Him through prayer, but He wants us to come to Him! He is waiting to talk with us! What a great thought—God desires fellowship with us!

Are you approaching God’s throne boldly? Are you spending time with Him in prayer? God longs to have a close relationship with you, but you must approach Him boldly. Take time right now to approach God’s throne of grace. Meet with Him and let Him encourage your heart today.
