Barnsley were formed in 1887 by the Rev. T.T. Pready.

T. T. Pready was curate of Barnsley St. Peter's.

They were known by that name Barnsley St. Peter's until 1897 the year before they were admitted to the Second Division of the Football League.

They moved to Oakwell in 1895. In 1912 they won the F.A. Cup for the only time and were known as "Battling Barnsley".
