Calvin's TULIP [Let’s Talk About Pre-destination]

from "Reflections of a Chronic Anthropologist"

John Calvin was a man who lived and preached during the time of the Protestant Reformation. After breaking from the Catholic Church he became the mouthpiece for a new idea that would later be called the doctrine of predestination or Calvinism. Calvinism is based on a series of beliefs known as TULIP or the five points of Calvinism:

Total Depravity

Total depravity is the belief in original sin. That is: Starting with the sins of Adam and Eve every human being born through natural generation is sinful from birth and in need of a savior. That is not to say that sinful men cannot be moral and upright they just are not spiritually upright because they do not believe in and follow God.

Unconditional Election

Unconditional election means that the elect were chosen not because of anything we have done or will do but because it pleased God to choose us. Calvinists believe that God chose the elect “before the foundation of the world” and we do not believe (as some do) that He chose us because he (being without time or space) has looked forward in our lives and seen that we would be “good” people or thatwe would “choose” Him, He chose us for no other reason than it pleased him to do so. I believe that this is what the bible tells us, in Ephesians 2:8-10 it says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Limited Atonement

Limited atonement is the belief that Jesus died to save those whom God had elected, not the whole world. This is supported in several verses of the Bible one in Matthew 26:26 where it is talking about the institution of the Lord’s Supper it says “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured our for many for the forgiveness of sins.” It does not say that it is poured out...
