Is it really the end ?

Its been great. I still think that there may be a chance of saving it. Here is their final press release

15th November 2001

The end of the line for
We´ve had fun but it´s time to go.

Apologies if this comes as a shock to some of you but this isn´t some crazed last minute decision, our hand forced by hordes of deathly silent, fiery eyed liquidators storming the office or such like, wapscallion just isn´t doing for us what it was designed to do: be a viable business.

We´ve worked relentlessly since the beginning of 2000 to create the most original and innovative gaming and chat site available on WAP and thanks to your support and feedback we believe we achieved that goal.

The other side of wapscallion didn´t quite go as we planned. It started off great: we talked to a lot of companies world wide, signed some good deals, we actually made a first year profit and even saw the tide of wapathy turn but then the market shifted. Due largely to the hysteria and blood lust involved in the 3G licensing procedure interest and budgets for WAP content were slashed. We saw it coming and attempted to circumvent the inevitable repercussions by restructuring our business offering, implementing our own premium content system, writing one of the biggest and most involving massively multiplayer games available. Time and budgets were tight but, being men of grit, we made the play anyway. And it failed.

The industry didn´t have any money for us and our users didn´t want to pay to play. We´re not angry or embittered at either side it´s just a damn shame because now we have a mature and busy WAP site (100,000-300,000 sessions a month) but no money or energy to keep it going.

So here´s the pitch. Our deadline is the 4th December 2001 - just a few weeks away - at which point we will disconnect the server and wheel it away into the sunset... unless... some interested third party wants to get involved. Want to buy into wapscallion and see it continue?...
