"The desert is fertile," my mother, Beatrice Mbozi used to tell us.

One of the atributes for which I'll ever remember her is her then hardworking spirit coupled with economic diversity in a bid to sustain our living to better levels.

In those old days as I was a young boy she took me on Saturdays alongside my fellow children to the river bank to help work in the vegetables field.

She was very ambitious. Oftentimes she saw to it that there was a kitchen garden at our compound.

Thus, we ate from the kitchen garden, whereas the produce from the river bank were meant for sale.

Today, the kitchen garden is part of my life for several reasons, and here I'll cite a few.

Health experts say that vegetables are relatively a good source of nutrients for human body development. In this vein, a kitchen without a garden is an "Incomplete Kitchen".

An aspect of micro-savings cannot be overstated. The money which would be used to buy vegetables from a market is saved, and can otherwise be allocated to other human needs.

Gradually, the little savings plus good health will transform the household status.
