Aegyptopithecus, which means Egyptian Primate, from Greek Αίγυπτος (Egypt) and πίθηκος (primate), is an earlyfossilcatarrhine that predates the divergence betweenhominoids (apes) andOld World monkeys. It is known from a single speciesAegyptopithecus zeuxis and lived some 35-33 million years ago in the early part of theOligocene epoch. It likely resembled modern-dayNew World monkeys (it is about the same size as a modernhowler monkey).Aegyptopithecus fossils have been found primarily in modern-dayEgypt.Aegyptopithecus is believed to be a basal catarrhine, a crucial link betweenEocene andMiocene fossil hominoids.[1]
Aegyptopithecus zeuxis has become one of the best known extinctprimates based on craniodental andpostcranial remains.[1]
