Rituals observed

There are a lot of rituals and proceedures with regard to fire walking all aimed at purifying oneself and rekindling the the link with God. After all fire is a vital element and needs respect so before one could enter or walk on fire ones body must be pure in order not to be disrespectful.
Pictured is Maha Kali. The whole procedure prayerwise lasts 18days. Begining with the hoisting of the sacred flag. Fire offerings are made daily to the Goddess and relevant deities. On the seventeenth day the Goddess is taken around the area on her palanquin. The fire pit is purified and bound up. Syringa leave's are laid down through the entire pit to prepare it for the fire.
The next day a fire sacrifice is performed to open up the pit spiritually and to start the fire. The Goddess/es are taken to the fire pit and after circumbulation placed in front of the pit. Devotees chose either to carry a fire pot or a garagum to fulfill their vow or devotion. A garagum is a brass or clay vessel containing symbolic offerings with an extension of syringa leaves from the spout upwards. The structure resembles a crown-like structure and is decorated with flowers. The significance
of this is that it signifies the head or crown of goddess Mariamman.
