Madurai Veeran- a regional tamil deity who is popular amongst the least sanskritized social groups of South India, especially Tamil Nadu. His name suggests association with the city Madurai and a warrior past. He is believed to be a great night who lived during the period when the Nayaks of Andra ruled certain parts of Tamil Nadu. For many years stories of his life have been passed on by oral tradition. Many in Tamil Nadu have admired him, to an extent that even today they worship him as one of
Gods. According to a story Madurai Veeran was the son of a North Indian King, left in the woods as he was considered an unlucky baby and could bring misfortune to the country. A cobbler who saw the baby in the wood by chance raised him. His bravery and talent earned his a chance to enter the army as a commander. But his misfortune made him fail by his own law which he enforced to eradicate the robbers from the country. His long time enemies by jealously convinced the King that Madurai veera was
one of the robbers. The king subjected Madurai Veeran to mutilation. His arm and leg were chopped off the pain of which caused his soul to leave his body. Later on the King learned that Madurai veeran was innocent and lifted his name.
