Durga (New)

The goddess, Durga, is the consort of Lord Shiva. When seen with her consort, Durga is shown with only two hands, a beautiful smiling face and wearing her usual ornaments. However, it is when she is worshipped alone that she can be shown in any of the following three forms: mild benevolent and fierce. The story of Durga's origin is widely known. When Mahishasura, a mighty demon, defeated Indra, the king of gods after a hundred year war and usurped his throne in heaven, the gods advised by Brahma
went to Lord Vishnu and Shiva to seek out their aid. As the enraged Goes sat together, a king of flame issued from their mouths and from this flame emerged the mighty goddess Durga with ten arms, each with a different weapon. Mounted on her lion, goddess confronted the demon who had defeated the gods and a battle ensued. The demon, however, did not die till Ma Durga put and to combat by spearing him through the heart. Her other feats include the defeat of the army of Chanda and Munda and also
aiding the defeat of Madhu and Kaitabha. During Navaratri the Goddess is worshipped in many ways one is the worship of her nine forms known as Sri Nav Durga.
