What to look out for:

• Pain
• Bleeding from ear
• Bloody, watery fluid leaking from ear
• Loss of hearing (in some cases)

What to do:

1. Sit the casualty down, leaning their head over onto the injured side.

2. Cover the ear with a sterile dressing and get the casualty to hold it in place.

3. The casualty should be taken to hospital, keeping their head inclined to the injured side.

Never plug the injured ear or insert anything into the ear canal.

Bloody, watery fluid leaking from ear may indicate serious head injury. Urgent medical attention is required.
