Physiotherapy, an allied field of medicine,
is a therapy that treats disabilities
through physical exercises.
It is highly recommended for those
with physical disabilities,
degenerative disorders, sportspersons, etc.
Physiotherapy is used to
relieve pain and improve mobility.
Aspirants must have completed
10+2 with science as core subjects
to pursue a degree or diploma course in physiotherapy.
The Bachelor’s course is of three-year duration
and post-graduation is of two-year duration.
It is also mandatory to undergo a one-year internship
after completing the graduation course.
The course contents include
anatomy, biomechanics, disability prevention,
physiology, pathology, pharmacology, psychology,
medical and surgical conditions, kinesiology,
rehabilitation, etc.
Apart from degree courses,
various short-term certificate courses
are also available.
Some personal traits that
a physiotherapist must possess are:
knowledge of the human anatomy,
good interpersonal skills, logical reasoning,
stamina, communication skills,
team spirit, career-oriented, etc.
Branches of physiotherapy
Musculo-skeletal physiotherapy:
Treats physical ailments connected
with structures close to joint region
such as bones, bursa, muscles and ligaments.
Cardio-Thoracic physiotherapy:
Deals with heart and lungs.
Neurological physiotherapy:
Treats problems in brain and brain nerves,
and spinal cord and nerves of the spinal cord.
Physiotherapy in Rehabilitation:
Rehabilitates the physically disabled
to near normal condition
Physiotherapy in Obstetrics:
Concerned with postural care
and physical fitness of women
during pre- and post-pregnancy.
Sports physiotherapy:
Assistance in sport activities
such as techniques of warming up,
cooling down, treatment of sport injuries, etc.
Physiotherapy in Fitness:
For physical fitness, postural care
and body muscle built.
Physiotherapists can find employment in
hospitals, rehabilitation centers,
health institutions, gymnasiums.
Those with higher qualifications
can opt for a career in teaching.
One could also setup
his/her own clinic
and practice on their own.
