To Uphold The Rule

Law, one of the oldest professions,
can prove to be an exciting career.
It is quite common to come across situations
that require legal advice in some way or the other.
To understand the situation one can take the advice
of a legal expert for correct interpretation of law.
Apart from rendering legal advice,
lawyers also draft contracts and wills,
represent them in the courts of law
and conduct negotiations for their clients.
There are numerous specialized areas
that a lawyer can pursue such as
corporate law, civil law, criminal law,
international law, copyrights law, company law,
labor law, patent law, constitutional law, tax law etc.
Many universities and colleges offer courses on law.
Some of the prestigious institutions that offer
law courses exclusively are
the NLSIU Banglore, NUJS, Kolkata,
NLU, Jodhpur, NALSAR, Hyderabad etc.
Eligibility:
Candidates in order to pursue a five-year course in law
must have completed 10+2 in either arts or science stream.
However, for a three-year course one must have graduated from
a recognized university or institution.
While in some states a Bachelors course
is known as Bachelors of Law (B.L.),
in others it is known as Legum Baccalaureus (LL.B).
Students must register with the Bar Council
of their respective state
to appear in the court of law.
For admission to post graduate programmes (M.L. /LL.M)
students must have a Bachelors degree.
The course is of two-year duration.
There are several, certificate, diploma
and post graduate diploma courses
offered by many universities of varying in duration.
Students can hone their skills
by specializing in any one of the subjects
that interests them.
Law courses do not merely
comprise of classroom studies.
It helps students gain practical knowledge
by including moot courts (mock courts)
and case studies in the syllabus.
To pursue a successful career in law,
one must be a good orator
and have penchant for reading voluminous books.
Logical reasoning, concentration, memory power,
self-confidence, etc., are some of the other attributes.
Jobs and careers:
Private practice is considered to be lucrative
for the adventurous, intelligent and the fortunate.
Corporate houses, hospitals, educational institutions,
housing corporations and companies recruit legal advisors
in various ranks depending on their experience.
One can reach the pinnacle by becoming
a Supreme Court or High Court Judge.
Other opportunities are judges, sub-judges,
magistrates, attorney general, solicitor general,
public prosecutors, professors, etc in the government sector.
