For people with flair for languages a career in foreign languages is a brilliant career option. Today different parts of the world seem much closer than before and the trade between the countries has expanded to a great degree. Knowing the Language of the country enhance the ability to communicate efficiently and improve trade relations. Today candidates knowing foreign languages like French, German, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and Korean are in great demand.
Career options for people proficient in foreign language has increased manifold. The globalization of the Indian economy has resulted in many multi- national companies coming to set offices in India. Many companies are opting for joint ventures abroad and some companies are even acquiring companies abroad. The escalating amount of scientific, technological and cultural information assures a mounting need for those who are able to assist international communications.
Foreign Language experts can pursue career in many industries like tourism, entertainment, public relations and mass communication, international organizations, embassies, diplomatic service, publishing houses, BPO’s etc. Careers can start from tour operators, online content writers, technical translators or decoders, interpreters and translators. Jobs like that of translators and interpreters require comprehensive knowledge of the language as they have to transfer spoken statements from one language to another or skillfully translate written documents. The most common career option in foreign language is teaching the language. Many proficient language experts work as freelancers work in translation bureaus, research organizations, international organizations like UNO, FAO, foreign companies, Reserve Bank of India, publishing houses etc. They are much in demand in the hospitality as airline industry too.
Today there is a growing demand for lesser known or less popular languages like Pashpio, Uzbek, Tajiks, Hebrew, and Portuguese etc in governmental work.
Today there are three types of courses. The Certificate course, Diploma course and the Degree courses. Some institutes offer both basic and advanced level courses such as postgraduate and PhD, some of them extending up to 5-6 years. The eligibility for certificate and degree courses is 10+2. In most of the places eligibility for the diploma course is the certificate course in that language. JNU is a major institution conducting language courses. For Japanese, there is a language proficiency test conducted by the Mombusho Scholars Association and Alliance Française is the centre for conducting various French tests like the TEF (required by the Canadian High Commission), the TCF, DELF /DALF tests and diplomas delivered by the French Ministry of Education
Pay scale varies according to the place and kind of work. Scale of pay varies with the kind and the place of work. A career in teaching can earn anything from Rs.10000/- p.m to Rs. 20000/- p.m. Translators get paid between Rs. 50/- to Rs.100/- per page. An interpreter gets paid on hourly basis and at present the rate varies from Rs. 300/- to Rs. 500/- per hour. A good interpreter can earn amount up to Rs.4000/-per hour. For those working with embassies can get paid between Rs. 8000/- p.m. to Rs. 10000/- p.m.
There are a number of universities across the country that offers courses in foreign languages. The Jawaharlal Nehru University is one of the most well known universities that offer courses in many languages.
