Jaguar Approach Wurz

Jaguar have made an approach to Alex Wurz, the Austrian’s McLaren team have confirmed.

Although Jaguar said on Monday that they would stand by the struggling Antonio Pizzonia, McLaren revealed that the Ford-owned team had opened discussions with them in a bid to sign test driver Wurz.

A McLaren spokesperson said: ´We have been approached by Jaguar and we are in discussions with them at the moment.´

Wurz, 29, is in his third year as a McLaren test driver and has a long-term contract with the team. However, he has not raced since 2000, when he parted company with Benetton.

Austrian newspapers reported at the weekend that Wurz was close to finalising a deal with Jaguar that would see him replace Pizzonia from his home grand prix at the A1-Ring onwards.

That makes sense as, in his most recent comments, Jaguar MD David Pitchforth would only commit the team to running Pizzonia at this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix. He refused to be drawn on whether the Brazilian would race beyond Barcelona, although he added that the team would ´continue to support his development and growth´.

Pizzonia has made a disappointing start to his F1 career. He has struggled to stay on terms with team-mate Mark Webber and has made a number of errors.

Among his most vocal critics has been Jaguar predecessor Eddie Irvine. The Ulsterman has accused Pizzonia of ´driving like an amateur´ so far this season.
