Markahan (256CE-316CE)

Mar Kahan Bokhari (Hebrew: כהן בוכרה) was a Jewish Talmudist who lived in Babylonia and was known as an Amora (commentator on the Oral Law) of the Third Generation. He was the son of Marzban Tikva Khorasan of Buxoro, and was the founder, president and director (resh sidra) of The Four Colleges (ארבע מכללות) of Gan Edhen ( גַּן עֵדֶן) and dean of the Yeshiva at Seleucia (or the Talmudic Academy of Seleucia). He was the author of the Markahan Halakha and regarded as a prophet and a healer. He was born 256 CE in Bukhara (Uzbek: Buxoro; Russian: Бухара; Persian: بخارا‎) and died in Seleucia (Ancient Greek: Σελεύκεια) in 316 CE. He attended the Yeshiva at Sura for a brief time and for a longer period the Academy of Nehardea but he was not a student of Shmuel of Nehardea. It is said that he predicted the day, month and year of his death. He is commonly known as Rav Markahan.
