A rare multisystem chronic recurrent disease characterized by recurrent ulceration in the mouth and genitalia, iritis, uveitis, arthritis, superficial thrombophlebitis and major vascular thrombosis (usually venous). Often treated with immunosuppressive therapy (corticosteroids, chlorambucil).


It is obtained for examination by aspiration from the anterior iliac crest or sternum. In many cases a trephine biopsy (removal of a core of bone marrow tissue) is also necessary.


At bronchoscopy a lung segment is washed with saline and the fluid retrieved for cell analysis.
