Mum's Final Week

I recieved a phone call at work from my sister telling me that mum has taken a turn for the worse. She told me that mum doesnt talk much and lost her sight. But her sight comes and goes. It takes time for mum to recgognise people. And she is in bed and cannot do nothing for herself anymore, which this means, she is dying.

At the end of the phone call, i broke down in tears, in front of my work colleagues and the customers. I was taken upstairs to be calmed down and to explain what happened. My manager was so sorry and told me to go home and come back to work when i am ready and up to it. So i went home, got myself ready and went straight to my parent's house. Mum was asleep, until later on she woke up. When she woke, she asked for me. Previously she didn't know who i was.

All mum can do is, sleep, wake, and listen, sometimes talk but very little. I was visiting every day, being there, spending time with her. We had nurses coming round to help out, and giving proper care for her. Nurses were from marie curie cancer care and the macmillans. They were on call 24 7.

It was a week before Mother's Day, and we came up with an idea to celebrate mother's day a week early. We knew deep down, mum won't make it to mother's day. My sister got her flowers, balloons and a card. My brother and my dad too. I decided to have a bouquet delievered. When i went to the florist to place an order, the assistant wondered why i wanted flowers delievered a week early. Before i answered, i broke down in tears. Then i said " My mum is dying of cancer and she won't make it to mother's day"

After i ordered the flowers, i went to a card shop and bought a card and a teddy bear. Later i went to my parents house and my bouquet already arrived. Mum managed to see the flowers and she smiled. I gave her the teddy bear and the card, i kissed her on the cheek and said to her "happy mothers day mum" Mum got hold of the teddy and she squeezed it tightly towards her. That day dad brought mum downstairs.

Dad gave my mum my card so she can open it. Her hands could not grip the card and struggled to open it. Dad opened it for her. It was heartbreaking to see mum suffer like that. Later in the evening, dad carried mum back upstairs to rest and sleep. She and all of us had a long tiring day.
