Origin of Skunk's Stink

told to me by tribal elder

When Skunk was first created his fur was a brilliant white but he was humble and didn't want special treatment.
If an animal caught a glimpse of him they would stop and stare at his blinding white coat.
Skunk was embarrassed by the attention his white fur brought him.
As time passed he began to like his "stardom", strutting around the forest as he were the Creator himself.
Skunk became arrogant and vain. The more awe the animals worshipped him in, the worse his attitude became.
Eventually he got bored with animals falling over to see his beautiful brilliance and would chase them away.
Skunk was now mean and nasty.
The Creator had been watching Skunk to see how he would honor the gift of such glorious fur.
Disappointed, the Creator took ash from his great pipe and covered skunk's white coat to a smelly, charcoal black.
To always remind Skunk of the gift he once had, the Creator drew with two fingers lines down Skunk's back.
No matter how much Skunk washed, the sut and smell remained.
And still remains to this very day.
