BAJOR

home planet to the Bajorians

HOMEWORLD: Bajor

SOLAR SYSTEM: Bajor-B'hava'el

CLASSIFICATION: CLASS M

FEDERATION MEMBER: no

PHYSIOLOGY

Humanoid race, distinguished outwardly only by extra wrinkles at the bridge of the nose. Their heart's internal arrangement is mirrored along a horizontal, not vertical axis; puncturing the lower ventricle of the heart brings immediate death, as discussed on stardate 46982.1. Slight deviations from Terran human physiology can be discerned through different reactions to body change. During pregnancy Bajoran females do not nauseate; instead they react by sneezing. Bajoran fetuses are also irremovable due to the high degree of vascularization in the placental/uterine interface.

LIFE EXPECTANCY AT BIRTH
128 years male, 130 years female

LANGUAGE

Predominately Bajoran, sizable minorities speaking Federation Standard English, smaller minorities speaking Kardassi, and Ferengi. Universal Translators virtually eliminate most language barriers.

BAJORAN SOLAR SYSTEM

Bajor-B'hava'el is a star with 14 planets whose appellation is commonly used for its largest and most populated world, Bajor. Situated in the Denorios Belt, which borders Cardassian space. It takes an average of 29 seconds for a Galor-class warship to leave Cardassian space and be in Bajoran space. The planet Bajor's distance to the central star is approximately 140 million km. Bajor's distance to the Denorios Belt and the wormhole is approximately 160 million km.

Planets in the Bajoran solar system
Bajor V, Bajoran homeworld (at least five moons)
Bajor VII, B'hava'el (at least three moons)
Bajor VIII, B'hava'el (six colonies)
Bajor IX, B'hava'el (largest gas giant in system)

EXTENDED TERRITORIES

Bajor's territory also extends to outposts on other nearby worlds and along the Cardassian border, such as Dreon VII; the first Bajoran colony in the Gamma Quadrant, New Bajor, was reported to be maturing by stardate 47879.2 until violent plasma storms in the Denorios Belt cut off communications.

WORMHOLE

The wormhole near the Bajoran homeworld was discovered on stardate 46379.1, and subsequent exploration revealed that it is a rare stable wormhole. It terminates in the Gamma Quadrant. The nearby wormhole and its non-lineal alien builders are worshipped as the Prophets by the natives, especially after contact devices called Orbs were discovered. The Prophets (the Bentel) are said to dwell in the Celestial Temple, "Frake Goryam", which is located in the Bajoran wormhole.Within the religious texts of Bajoran faith, safe passage through the Bajoran wormhole is seen as the blessing of the Prophets who reside within in the Celestial Temple.

PLANET:

Bajora (Bajor)

• The 5th planet of the Bajoran star system.

• Class M planet, Earth-like in appearance with large, blue oceans and seas that appear a little more greenish than Earth's from orbit. Bajor's mass is 1.6 times the mass of the Earth

• Rotational period of 26 Earth hours, one year (sten) is 319 days. Each year has 16 months with 4 seasons.

• at least five moons, although two may be rogues.

• Population: 17,525,000,000.

• Under Cardassian occupation for over 50 years.

• located close to the first known stable wormhole, discovered circa stardate 46392 in 2369.

• The entire planet, or at least its largest continent, is known by geographic areas such as the Northwestern District, Northeastern District, etc. These districts in turn are composed of provinces such as Tozhat, Musilla, Hedrikspool, Dahkur, Lonar, and Rakantha.

BAJORAN SOCIETY :

OVERVIEW:

The Bajoran culture has flourished for over 500,000 years. Over time, the Bajorans became a race of master artisans, architects, philosophers, and scholars whose lives are centered on their faith. The level of civilization declined during Cardassian rule from 2328 to 2369. [Ensign Ro] The decades-long occupation of the planet by the Cardassians destroyed many ancient temples and works of art, and the planet itself has been stripped of its most valuable resources. The Bajora were one of the first of the known races to achieve space flight. [Explorers] They brought their art and architecture to countless other worlds before the Occupation. [The Circle] Over 10 million Bajorans were killed during the Cardassian Occupation. [Cardassians] Following the Withdrawal and a period of civil unrest, the people were united under a single Provisional Government and with the assistance of the UFP started to rebuild their society. Recently began an accelerated progress towards full Federation membership. [Crossfire] At the insistence of the Emissary, reluctantly signed a non-aggression pact with the Dominion to remove themselves from the fighting and the quite real possibility of the destruction of Bajor. [Call to Arms] School years are organized by age "levels," and perhaps even in the refugee camps they offered art to youngsters as young as age 4. [Emissary, Part I].

Many Bajorans have joined Starfleet despite their home planet of Bajor still being in recovery from the Cardassian occupation, while others prefer to work with the Federation from within the Bajoran system. Bajor's tradition of art and architecture was strewn around countless planets before the occupation. Its science and space programs were back on track soon after the occupation: at least one probe was sent to scan planets and life signs in the Gamma Quadrant.

D'jarra Caste

Ancient Bajorans lived their lives according to the d'jarra caste system. A Bajoran's social status and vocation was dictated by the d'jarra at birth and usually indicated in part within the design of the earring. Passed on for generations, the system was abandoned during the Occupation, when every Bajoran became subservient of the Cardassians.

EARRING

The identity of Bajorans is intrinsically connected to their earring. The design is often deeply connected to family lineage and the archaic d'jarra. Many Bajorans have a unique and personal insignia designed for themselves, often integrated into the traditional d'jarra design. The earring is most often worn on the right ear, and is usually diamide-laced birithium in substance.

NAME

Bajoran custom places the family name before an individual name. Captain Vahn Bahlar is therefore correctly addressed as Captain Vahn, while her familiar name, used only by close friends, is Bahlar.

RELIGION

The Bajorans' deeply religious culture honors the 'Prophets' who guide the Bajorans. They believe in guidance from the prophecies revealed to ancient religious men much in the same way as the Greeks believed in the Delphi Oracles. The Prophets are the central figures of the Bajoran faith, and are considered transcendent entities who exist in a non-linear time frame. Bajoran faith believes the Prophets to be the embodiment of truth, and divine beings who reveal their wisdom through visions given by the Orbs. The Prophets are also the ones who replenish the life force of Bajorans, the 'Pagh' that allows existence.

ORBS:

Approximately 10,000 years ago, the first Orb - with eight others to follow, appeared in the skies of Bajor. Taken as a gift from the Prophets to endow their followers with wisdom and insight, the Orbs were traditionally housed in sacred shrines at temples and monasteries around Bajor. Each Orb has a different function. After the Occupation, only one from the original nine Orbs remained. Through the years, three have been recovered and are currently in the hands of the Bajoran people. Those four Orbs are:
The Orb of Prophesy and Change (Third Orb): Blue energy form. It presents the user with a surrealist projection of the future, open to interpretation but usually correct in some way.
The Orb of Wisdom: Pink energy form. Grand Nagus Zek was responsible for the restoration of this Orb to Bajorans in 2371. It forces overseen knowledge into the user's attention.
The Orb of Time: Purple energy form. It can transfer users back or forwards in time.
The Ninth Orb: Green energy form. It places the user into a vivid distant memory.

The Cardassian Occupation:

The planet's resources and pride were plundered by occupying Cardassians from 2318 to 2369, until decades of underground resistance finally forced the withdrawal; it had been annexed outright in 2329. While Bajoran underground cells fought for freedom during the Occupation and its religious orders were persecuted, the University of Bajor and institutions such as the Bajoran Center For Science remained open, natives were allowed to maintain technical, scientific and clerical jobs and training, and many Bajoran data banks survived intact and functional.

Living under Cardassian Occupation for over 50 years had a deep psychological impact on the Bajoran people. Many Bajorans experience the long-term effects of growing up in the midst of war. Symptoms of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) are prevailent among many Bajorans. Those symptoms can take the form of insomnia, memory loss of traumatic events, memory flashbacks, lack of trust, and difficulty in trusting others. Many Bajorans may also carry physical scars - reminders of harsh encounters with their Cardassian invaders.
