> Who was
st valentine?
Saint valentine was a catholic bishop who was executed by emperor claudius in AD 420.

The story is that claudius had decided that married men made poor soldiers, so he banned marriage from his empire.

Valentine didn't agree and would secretly marry young men that came to him.
Claudius was less than Happy about this when He found out, and had valentine stoned and beheaded.

There's a romantic twist to the story in that while valentine was imprisoned, He fell in love with the blind doughter of His Jailer.

Before He was taken to his death, He signed a farewell message to Her, "From your valentine," The phrase has been used on his day ever since.

The catholic church recognise three saints called valentine-all were martyred on february 14!

> Who sent the first card?
The first true valentine card was sent in 1415 by charles, duke of orleons, to his wife. He was imprisoned in the tower of london at the time.

In victorian times it was considered bad luck to sign a valentine's Day card.

> Why send a card when you can wear a spoon?
In wales, wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on february 14th. Hearts, Keys and keyholes were favourite decorations on the spoons.
The decoration meant "you unlock my heart!"

> No romance in Hawaii :
On february 14, 1779, captain james cook, the great english explorer and navigator, was murdered by natives of Hawaii during his third visit to the pacific Island group.
