-O- La gangs

Some interesting facts...

By 1998 over 1,500 street gangs were reported to be present in every state across the US (450 of these reside in LA). By the year 2000 Hispanic street gangs had established a multi-racial membership, thus becoming the fastest growing type of gang in the country.

The first Hispanic street gangs appeared in the early 1900s in LA, formed by unhappy Mexican-Americans who resented being treated as a 2nd hand citizens in "their own country" (just 50 years earlier, California and 6 other states belonged to Mexico).

In the 1940´s LA gang members uniform consisted of a felt hat, highly polished calcos shoes and zoot suits. They coined the gang phrase that still exists today "Its better to die on your feet than to live on your knees."

"drive-by" entered gang vocabulary in the 1950´s, as did the use of red or blue bandanas to denote allegiance. This stemmed from the uniforms that were given to the prisoners in California state prisons.

Until the 1980´s the rules of engagement were; Never commit crimes in your own neighbourhood; Never involve innocent people and schools, churches and shops. Today however it is just simply "only the strong surive".
