The Guanches

The origins of the primitive in the Canary Islands, ie, the Guanches, is still a mystery. Some historians believe that the Guanches, race cromañón who lived in caves, were of Egyptian origin, for the resemblance they had in the method of momificar corpses.

Others support a more romantic, Indians were not missing a race of the lost continent of Atlantis and others still believe they are of Scandinavian origin or Carthaginian by the nature of seafaring they had. The similarity between the physical characteristics of many modern canaries and their possible ancestors, the Vikings,
is impressive, but after the conquest by the Spanish Canary Island, the racial mix has provided a rich pupurrí of people and races. What does seem more likely among all the theories that have emerged is that the Guanches came originally from North Africa, the Berber people, who could have had a Scandinavian descent since before Spain conquered the Canaries already had a strong relationship with Europe and writers of ancient Greece and Rome have witnesses travel by sea from the Mediterranean to the Canary Islands.
If the prehistoric origins of the Canary Islands are a mystery, so are its original inhabitants \ "Guanches ", the name applied to the inhabitants and lenguaque wore those living in the Canary Islands before the Spanish conquest, as the Spanish conquistadors reflected in its chronic each island had its own tribe of stargazing,
who speak slightly different dialects. Also, the word \ "Guanche " is for some writers the people living on the island of Tenerife, but today it is generally accepted that the original inhabitants in all the Canary Islands had a common origin. The term Guanche is used today to refer to people who lived around the Canary archipelago, although it remains an embarrassment to historians and ethnographers.

However, with the descent of the inhabitants of North Africa there is a similarity between the language of the Berber nomads and the extinct Guanche language. The Guanches were high, well developed and many had blue eyes, skeletal research showed that men measured between 1.75 meters and 1.82 meters,
to be men of Fuerteventura, the highest of all, with an average of 1.82 meters. Preserved skeletons in the Municipal Museum of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Canary Island Museum of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, show that the Guanches had some very big and thick bones, indicating they had great strength. When someone died, washed the body, and fills up every day with ointments made from various plants and minerals whose recipe is unknown. Put the body in the sun, and so for several weeks, until it was dry. Xaxo called to the mummy. During all this time extending the grief of their relatives and friends. Then metían to xaxo between skins painted or otherwise marked to allow identification of the body, fur and cosían these forming a box around the deceased. Finally, put the body inside the cave that served as burial to the family, separating the ground by wooden planks. Beside the body were preparing offerings: ornaments (necklaces accounts of mud and pig tusks), gánigos mud, shells of barnacles, spears. If it was a Mencey deceased, he was accompanying the ANEP, the scepter symbolizing the real power. The chroniclers of one of the first conquest of the Canary Islands John Le Verrier, wrote at the beginning of the fifteenth century, the Padres and Pedro Bontier ...... \ "not be found anywhere people could be so beautiful and travel by around the world and so graceful men and women who have great minds like these islanders, whether you deal with someone educate \ ".

The Guanches, were endowed with extraordinary speed, useful for jumping over cliffs or dangerous for any sport practiced in the islands, despite its lack of weapons \ 'modern \ ", as they endured long battles against various invaders, being the Spanish conquistadors who took nearly a century mastering the tough resistance offered

The physical characteristics and many customs of the Guanches had survived the conquest and the passage of time, Gofio, for example, was the basis for feeding of canaries, this is a type of barley flour, corn or wheat ground and toasted to which the Guanches add water or milk goat, in many families today canary gofio eat at breakfast and at dinner instead of bread. Fighting Canaria, is a wrestling practiced by the Guanches and particularly in Tenerife, today still has enormous appeal among the young and elderly people who say that the canary is \ "the most noble of sports \." Some customs have disappeared as marriages and divorces, were allowed much freedom in the Canary Islands during the time Guanche, divorce and remarriage because it did not give rise to many disputes, there are reports that some women of the Isles married to three husbands because did husbands or bred regularly, living in natural caves, many of which are still preserved in almost all the islands, spending winters near the sea and in the summer in mountainous areas.

Mummified their bodies as the ancient Egyptians and Peruvians, a fact that led to the idea of a common origin among the three ethnic groups, often mentioned by fans to the theory of Atlantis, unfortunately, very little is known about the legal system or social hierarchy Guanche, apart from the existence of a class of nobility feudal.Fabricaban materials daffodil, plant fiber or palm, and although it did not know the wheel, had a primitive form of pottery that are still practiced. Over time they went missing most of the traces of life Guanche as quickly assimilated the language of the Spanish conquistadors in the entire Archipilago.

Guanche language has been very difficult to study, like Latin, the Guanche is a dead language, but unlike the language of the ancient Romans, nobody can talk or write Guanche at present, linguists have no clear idea on the structure of the language, basing his studies on rare inscriptions and a number of words, usually names of places in the islands, which have been transmitted for centuries, the linguist canary Francisco Artiles, made a systematic study living as a shepherd of goats during a time, working and studying the vocabulary of pastors and ways to treat their flocks, Mr. ARTILES called \ "guanchismos " a word derived from the language of their ancestors, these remnants of the tongue and usanba Guanche is currently used daily by the goat herders of Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and other islands. Words like mastuca, firanca, puipana and ambrasaca refer to the color of skins of goats. A tofio is a receptacle used by shepherds for computers. Mr. ARTILES has compiled a dictionary called Teberite (name given to the incision in the ear of the goat to determine the owner) that includes more than 12,000 words derived from the original Guanche, where most of these \ "guanchismos " referring to the names of locations of the islands.

Many of these words begin with the letter \ "t " because ta and you relate to the articles and, comparative studies with the language of the Berber have shown a striking resemblance to the Guanche language, such studies have reinforced the idea that the original inhabitants of the islands came from North Africa, endorsing this hipotisis the almost constant wind blowing in the area, which could have made the navigation to these islands relatively easy, although the evidence is low.

Women stargazing.

If You are a woman in a lonely, do not you happen to speak. No man that price, no brave warrior, dare break the taboo that forbids to speak to a woman in a lonely without her prior permits. ¿Why? Perhaps a taboo associated with the blood of menstruation, some say, a mechanism to ensure the respect and sanctity of women, say others. Although Guanche is a patriarchal society, women's role is very important. On several islands inheritance is matrilineal, it is they who ensure the transfer of real power. This is the case of Gran Canaria, where he still remembers the \ "Queen " Atidamana. Also, when Gran Canaria pays for an end to the Castilian troops, carrying canaries do to a girl, the daughter of the last Guanarteme (King of the island) triumphantly, and with all the honors handed to the new lords, is she the custodian of power and legitimacy of the sovereignty of his people. In other cases, women are so fierce when it comes to combat or to encourage and assist their men in battle, the conquerors who speak of \ "the Amazon " on the island of La Palma, or be transmitted with legendary traits the history of Guacimara, \ "real princess " Anaga (Tenerife), who participated in the struggles against those who tried to land on the beaches of Añaza. The woman was also an important role in intertwined stories of heroism from the legend who speak of princesses and aristocrats who preferred to die dropped from the cliffs rather than be taken prisoner by the Europeans. This ritual suicide, a symbol of their love for freedom, as practiced not only women but also men of the families \ 'real \ ", and was preceded by the cry " Vacaguaré \ "(I want to die!).

However, the woman appeared to have a more submissive role in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, where hospitality is practiced bowing to the host's own woman to accompany him on the bed. Nor was going well when the woman came times of scarcity or overpopulation. When believed that the number of inhabitants was higher than what natural resources would allow, both in La Palma and in Gran Canaria came to practice female infanticide: the killing newborn females unless it was the firstborn. This was observed, as transmitting from the family line.
